They are good trees for small children to climb, with branches starting low to the ground and close together like steps or a ladder. The leaves are beautiful. The sweet gum balls (fruits) have a number of uses, from weaponry in childhood battles to making horses buck (I do NOT approve of this use) and putting in fires to pop and crackle.
Some do chew the resin, but I never liked it. People chew pine resin, too.

Even when all the rest of the sky is cloudy and overcast, if I photograph this one tree, the sky is clear and blue. 😀
