Waters Of Night

.
.
Do you remember?
When we were so young,
And, for a moment, free?
Do you remember?
.
It could not have been you, on the shore,
You could not have been there,
When I swam into the night,
When I flew into the blue-black water.
.
Free and safe and alone,
Glorious the moonless sky,
Star-song of deepest warm dark,
Still I swim the black waters of night.
.
Do you remember?
When we were so young,
And for a moment free?
Do you dare remember?
.
Wicked, I taunted you, drunk
With our dark night star-songs.
Predator patient, I see you waiting,
Back turned, indifferent, arms akimbo.
.
I shall drown in darkness and starlight,
Before I relent and swim ashore.
Your indifference an oily film, reflecting
Remembrance of wondrous bottomless night waters.
.
But do you remember?
When we were so young,
And for a moment free?
Do you dare remember?
.
Was it nothing or fear that held you?
Or perhaps the stars dazzled you,
When I swam into the moonless sparkle-night,
When I flew into deep starry blackness?
.
Singing and alive and alone,
Glorious the warm moonless freedom,
Star-song of the deepest dark.
I fly through the waters of night.
.
Can you remember?
When we were so young,
And, for a moment, free?
Do you also remember?
