Actually I was trying to use Ukrainian. However the phrase З новим роком is closer to the Russian than the way I was trying to say happy new year, literally, rather than as an idiom. The one consonant word or sound I thought was a mistake.
I have found, though, that if I hold my mouth and face like orthodox singing monks, and speak in English, I do sound, as if I have a Russian accent, even if it is really gibberish. 🙂
I bet if I get some sleep I will be more likely to welcome new energy:-)

Thanks for clarifying Bear, speaking Russian is tough, we have to retrain the way our mouths move. Lada is teaching me to speak, a lot of tongue action and annunciation. Enjoy u’r rest!

I imagine you are making quick progress. You’ll have to record yourself reading Yevtushenko, or Pasternak, or one of the other many great Russian writers. Through all of her turmoil, Russians have always bravely produced beautiful language arts.

Nice collection, Bear. I can’t believe that the Western US isn’t a crater. They have done quite a few ‘tests’ out that way. Yikes!

It has bee forty years since I drove in the SW (excluding Texas .. was there more recently .. though we did do a side to Carlsbad)) But even then there were pseudo “natural” visual barriers along long, miles and miles long, stretches of highway. The Louisiana salt caverns have been used for nuclear waste storage since the early 1950s. Maybe since before your parents were born. The Nevada testing grounds were visually inaccessible, from major highways, when I was a young teen. We could and did see from back-roads. At one time, late sixties, I drove by the nuclear submarine testing sight in Utah. That was visible. I think that facility has been closed. Old missile silos are being sold as real estate. People build “survival” bunkers in them. My father’s house (where I was last January when Lisa was ill) has a nuclear bomb shelter, but no music. My friend in Seoul has a bomb shelter, including 50,000 gallons of potable water in his basement, dug into granit bedrock. He was 14, and on a train with his parents, in Japan. They SAW the Hiroshima flash. …. your parents may remember bomb drills in elementary school. I know (knew.. one is now deceased) people who fought on each side at Bay of Pigs….. and that map doesn’t include accidents or power plants., like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl,…defunct Russian nuclear artillery …. whata mess… that is almost all left overs from the “Greatest Generation” the WWII bunch. Lakeview, Oregon, where I went to junior high (now middle school) has had a swarm of hundreds and hundreds of smallish (but felt) earthquakes, in the last year, was founded as a uranium mining town. The phosphate pits in Florida emit radon. In many areas it is dangerous to have basements or even enclosed crawl spaces due to radon.
We have to just stop, and go a different direction.
There is a reason I used the Ukrainian State Symphony Orchestra’s performance of the Russian Prokofiev.

Whoa. We do need to stop. We had high levels of radon in our house in CO. We found out during an inspection after we had moved to Mobile. We lived in the house for 8 years.

I think it’s a big if, if humanity even makes it to 2016, the wars, environmental devastation, pilfering, ethnic cleansing, etc. are not sustianable and could very well end most life forms, however, I’m holding up a little wildflower peace bouquet, saying: not on my watch!

That is a big “if” that all life has always faced. And always will. Ragnarök is not this year. All the pre-requisites have not taken place. Armageddon cannot be predicted. No one knows the time nor the hour. All we can do, is to do the best we can.
