Musical instruments made from Trash!!!!!

Date: Monday,

Hello Granny,

Cateura, Paraguay is a town essentially built on top of a
landfill. Garbage collectors browse the trash for sellable goods, and children
are often at risk of getting involved with drugs and gangs. When orchestra
director Szaran and music teacher Fabio set up a music program for the kids of
Cateura, they soon have more students than they have instruments. That changed
when Szaran and Fabio were brought something they had never seen before: a
violin made out of garbage. Today, there’s an entire orchestra of assembled
instruments, now called The Recycled Orchestra.

  1. Thank you DesertRose. The Brazilian band Uakti uses homemade and often original instruments. Uakti uses new materials though. Lots of PVC. Metamorphosis (see right column) is from the album Aguas da Amazonia, by Bill Glass. I think the Blue Man band (haven’t seen them in a while) used to do that also. I am glad these kids are getting this spirit boost through music. It also gladdens me that you understand the real signifigance of what they are doing. Thank you for all that you have done.—-Granny
